You may know me best as Meredith Nic Essus, princess of faerie. Or perhaps as Merry Gentry, Los Angeles private eye. To protect my unborn children, I have turned my back on the crown, choosing exile in the human world with my beloved Frost and Darkness. Yet I cannot abandon my people. Someone is killing the fey, which has left the LAPD baffled and my guardsmen and me deeply disturbed. I thought I’d left the blood and politics behind in my own turbulent realm. But now I realize that evil knows no borders, and that nobody lives forever—even if they’re magical.

Divine Misdemeanors Meredith Gentry Book 8 A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Laurell K Hamilton Laural Merlington Random House Audio Books

Merry Gentry and her band of merry men are back. This time with as much style and pizzazz as the first three books in the series. Divine Madness brought the series back from the edge of "but she started out so well" territory. The characters show much more depth. There is mystery galore between the covers. Also, amazing sensuality.
Merry is a fairy princess, pregnant with twins. Her men are the royal body guards that once belonged to the evil Queen, Merry's aunt Andais. Each one of the male characters are rich in depth and detail. Each one swoon worthy. And totally committed to keeping Merry and the babies safe from her relatives, who moistly just want her dead or under their thumb.
Merry is focused on the lesser fey, magical races, and humans surrounding the princess and her magical court. She tries to balance a career as a private detective with her fame and escaping assassination attempts. All the while getting surprise visits from the Goddess herself. She's a busy woman.
The writing is, as always, pretty good. It's fast paced, action packed, sexy as can be, a really fun reading experience. I definitely will be suggestive this one, along with the rest of the series, to my friends and acquaintances.

Divine Misdemeanors Meredith Gentry Book 8 A Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Laurell K Hamilton Laural Merlington Random House Audio Books Reviews

I'm pretty new to the world of Merry and her merry men, so I haven't reached the disillusioned stage many of her long-time fans seemed to have reached, yet.

I like Merry a lot and enjoy reading her adventures, but the plot inconsistencies really bother me sometimes. In A Lick of Frost, Frost says that he never had children with Rose, and fears that he may not be able to get Merry pregnant because he's always been unable to breed. But in Divine Misdemeanors, Merry has that conversation with the men after she has her first signs of morning/night symptoms, and Frost says he had a child with Rose. Whut. When Merry's dog Mungo has two red ears in Mistral's Kiss, but in this book he only has one red ear. So which one is it?

I wish LKH or her editors would catch inconsistencies like those.

I've never really followed the Merry Gentry series because of the plot. I'm in it for the smut. I love that LKH has done what not many authors would do and gave her character a male harem. IDGAF if most people spit on it and curse the character as a Mary Sue; At this point, any female character that can get home without drowning seems to be labeled a Sue, and as I've already said I just want my smut.

The ivy and bondage scene for this book... didn't satisfy me. Rhys' scene was nice though, I'll give her that. Bottom line is, the smut wasn't up to par this time around and I felt sad for that.

I hope this isn't the last of Merry's adventures.

This book left me hanging and made me wonder about a lot of things. Will Gilda pose a bigger threat to Merry and her men... Is Griffin hiding in LA and possibly this "Oberon" consort of Gilda, the reason why she seemed so disgusted with wannabe faes... What the heck is happening to the Seelie and Unseelie Courts... Is LKH going to stick to giving Merry at least one boy, as was previously printed in Swallowing Darkness or is she going to be inconsistent with that one, too... What's going to happen with the humans and part-fae that Merry's called to her now... Will they be homeless when Maeve gets back... What good are the pieces of faerie they've created in LA if they can't use them or live in them... etc... etc...
This book didn't have the heart-stopping action as the previous novels, although it was well written and had a good storyline. There was a lot of infighting between the guards and Merry, trust issues also abound. Yet Merry manages to do the improbable and continues to balance out both guards and lovers, even the friends in her life. Bittersweet was a sad character, sometimes Bitter, sometimes Sweet - but always doing her best in everything she does. I feel bad for the little fae. I totally understand feeling as if you aren't good enough and that sometimes being yourself isn't enough either
I have loved most of LKH's books since then was introduced to them 15 years ago. The plot twists, character development and continuation through the series have always been a source of enjoyment for me. I rarely get to read these days and when I do, I reach for my favorites and favorite authors. I am no longer shocked by the sex scenes, and truthfully I can live without them. Hamilton has a way of drawing you in and keeping by you engaged.
She may have turned down the crown to the Unseelie court a month ago, but to her entourage, the demi-fey and Red Caps, Merry is their queen. She was separately crowned by faerie as the Queen of the Sluagh, and that's a title she did keep. About two months pregnant with twins, Merry is back working for the Gray Detective Agency and asked to consult when a number of demi-fey are killed and everything is staged to match a picture in a children's book. The demi-fey have to be warned and not everyone is on board with how to handle the situation.

One memorable character we meet is Gilda, the Fairy Godmother of L.A. She believes she's the leader of the fey in the area and Merry wants to know just how the elderly woman's power was increased.

We see some problems on the home front as some of the newer guards don't yet trust Merry to keep her word on it being okay for them to have relationships with others. After all, both sides of her family are crazy. And one of the people brought into their godhood is allowing it to go to his head and has to be reined in.

This story is back to being part mystery although a lot of ink is again devoted to sex and an increase in power. In an interesting twist, Danu is again working through Merry, but this time to help the soldiers who are still wearing the nails that fell out of her shoulder, using them to heal.

An interesting mix of topics that is somewhat buried in conversation and sex that is too graphic and drawn out for my liking.
