Ten men adrift on a lifeboat. Only one will live to tell the tale.
The sequel to This Time Tomorrow.
June 1944, World War Two, the middle of the Indian Ocean a convoy ship is torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat. Most on board are killed but ten sailors manage to clamber aboard a lifeboat. With almost nothing to eat or drink, the men are cast adrift at the mercy of The Unforgiving Sea.
The sea and the elements push the men to their limits but it is the vagaries of man that brings out the worse in each of them. Discipline and comradeship deteriorate as, day by day, events take their deadly toll, leaving each man to fight for himself.
Robert Searight, the son of Guy from This Time Tomorrow, emerges as the sole survivor. Traumatised by the experience, he returns to his English village to find peace and recuperate. His only task is to return a dead friend’s wedding ring to Marion, the man’s widow. But on returning home, Marion, having left in mysterious circumstances, is nowhere to be found. No one, it seems, is prepared to say why.
His return to the village brings back the heartache he felt when, a year previously, his fiancée, troubled by her own past, breaks off their relationship.
And here, in his village, having received a warm welcome home, Robert faces the contradictions of a small community, decent on the outside but seething with prejudice and suspicion inside; a village with a foul secret at its heart.
But ultimately, it’s his own dark secret that he must confront before he can come to terms with his broken heart and the trauma of having survived The Unforgiving Sea.
A sequel to This Time Tomorrow, The Unforgiving Sea is, on its surface, a tale of murder, survival and loss, while at its core we find a story of deep love, loyalty and forgiveness.
Rupert Colley is the founder, editor and writer of the bestselling ‘History In An Hour’ series of ebooks and audio, published by HarperCollins.
Historical fiction with drama and heart.

The Unforgiving Sea The Searight Saga Volume 2 Rupert Colley 9781517027278 Books Reviews
The Unforgiving Sea is the continuing saga of the Searight family. It's now 1944, the middle of WWII. A sunk ship,2 weeks in a lifeboat with 9 other men and you alone survive. This is Roberts story. (Robert is the illegitimate son of Guy Searight from the first book in the series, This Time Tomorrow.)
Having survived the ordeal of the lifeboat Robert has a wartime/deathbed promise to fulfill. Can he fulfill it? Can he come to terms with the survivor guilt he feels?
While this is a stand alone book I highly recommend reading This Time Tomorrow so you get a more intimate feeling for Roberts family. Am anxious for the 3rd book in the series The Red Oak.
Again, Rupert Colley has painted a vivid, living picture of people who have survived terrible experiences, and those whose lives are lived around the periphery of the same. Robert, a merchant seaman, was on a ship sunk by a German U-boat far out at sea. He was the only survivor of about 40 men and (600 mules). His two weeks in a boat, with all those around him spiraling downward, left indelible scars on his soul.
His month’s leave in his hometown gives him time to recuperate some, to face old demons, and to help a few around him heal a bit, too. He comes to understand how vital reconnections are for closure.
Mr. Colley, I am sincerely grateful for your amazing writing. I will be reading much more of it!
This masterpiece of story telling, describes a period in a life of a man, caught in the conflict of war, fighting for basic survival, against not the enemy, but the elements and human beings turning to the base instincts, fighting sun hunger and thirst, caught at sea in an open boat, praying for rescue.
Then, rescue comes and life is drawn back into the normality that most live and take for granted. However, just like on the lifeboat, death take those around the survivor, causing him to feel that he is guilty for not having done more in order to save each and every one.
The threads of various episodes in the main characters life, are interwoven to create this fascinating tale.
Yes, it is difficult to read what our forebearers went through, with just the one example of a ship and it's crew being decimated, by the dreaded U boats.
The story of heroic struggle is what should be considered, when reading a book of this period and the writer has painted that struggle of man against man as well as man against nature in a truly masterful way.
I voluntarily submitted this review after reading an advanced copy of this book.
Could hardly put it down, same as with book 1. CaN hardly wait for book 3.
very graphic noy the best read
I like historical fiction and liked the authors style in Book 1 of this saga so I looked forward to this Book 2. I enjoyed this book just as much as the Book 1. It is almost like 2 different books and both parts are a good read and found myself eager to get back to reading when I was interrupted. I look forward to reading book 3 and other books by this author. It is a great feeling to find an author when I enjoy their books and know that there are many more that he wrote that I can look forward to reading.
This book contains two parts. The first part is about survival at sea. I enjoyed reading the first part. The second part is about his life after the rescue. There is no discussion about his rescue and how he faired after the rescue. It leaves the book a bit disjointed in my opinion.
Yes I found myself caught up in this story right from the beginning and hated that the story ended. I could have read on for many more chapters it was so enjoyable.
More twists and turns than I expected.
Characters were well developed. I felt that I came to know them.
Fantastic read.
